Hamlet Poster Series

American Players Theatre | Concept

I had the chance to see Hamlet performed at American Players Theatre shortly before this project.

Burger’s performance, and the play itself, is intense and dark. Death is constant throughout the story -- through poison, suicide, reminiscing about a late friend...

For this series, I wanted to use these themes to create an eye-catching poster that would resonate with those familiar with the play, without revealing too much to new viewers.

Initial Sketches

I wanted to stay away from the specific imagery of Hamlet holding Yorick’s skull, while still leaning into the themes & imagery of death & poison.

Early on, I got attached to this simplistic skull design, and carried it through the rest of my graphic ideas. I like that the skull is ambigous enough to stand as a symbol of death without the specific ‘hand holding skull’ motif.
